If you start looking into the best ways to keep your jewellery looking beautiful for a long time, you will find a wealth of information about what you are not meant to do. This is because jewellery is very fragile and can get damaged or dulled. Here we would like to share our tips for enjoying radiant jewellery for as long as possible. Although gold jewellery never really gets discoloured, yellow-gold and rose gold can gradually get darker, while white-gold jewellery can gain a yellow glow. This is something you'll want to avoid. Let's start with some general tips for each type of jewellery and each type of material.
Take it off
We'll start with the most important tip for keeping your jewellery looking beautiful, which is being aware of the best time to take off your jewellery. This is perhaps more often than you might think. Sweat, perfume, make-up, soap, chlorine and hand/face creams can all impact the shine of a piece of jewellery. Make sure you take off your jewellery when you go to sleep and when you shower, do exercise, go swimming or clean the house. Make taking off your jewellery before going to sleep, showering or putting on make-up or perfume part of your daily routine. Going to the gym, going swimming or about to do some cleaning? Take your jewellery off. It sounds like a lot of fuss, but you'll thank us later, as it will help your jewellery keep its shine for longer.
Storage
So far we've emphasised removing your jewellery, but it's also super important not to lose your jewellery. Choose a permanent location, not near a bath or sink and which is out of the reach of small children, such as a bedside table, dresser or a drawer in your bathroom. You can also store jewellery in the Blush box that was provided with your item. If you want to store multiple items of jewellery at the same time, the best thing to do is store them in separate boxes or use a jewellery box with separate compartments. This helps to prevent pieces of jewellery from getting tangled up together or getting scratched.
Give them a (quick) bath
Although you might not choose to wear your jewellery while exercising or showering, your jewellery can still end up looking a little dull over time. Grease from your skin, oils, creams and soap can also cause diamonds, zirconia and other precious stones in your Blush jewellery to lose their shine over time. Here are some tips to help keep your items of jewellery looking radiant by washing them (please be aware of what precious metal your jewellery is made from, as the best cleaning method for each one can vary slightly).
- Make gold jewellery shine again by washing it in a bowl of lukewarm (not hot!) demineralised water with a little green soap.
- You can also use a lukewarm bowl of demineralised water for cleaning silver jewellery, adding some baking soda and a small piece of aluminium foil to the water.
- Do you have jewellery with gemstones? After washing them, brush off any dirt from the stones using a clean unused toothbrush.
- Prevent jewellery with pearls from coming into direct contact with perfume, surgical spirit, cleaning agents and cosmetic products. These are best cleaned just by wiping them.
After washing your jewellery items in these solutions, you can give them a final touch up using a special cleaning cloth. Choose a silver or gold cloth A microfibre cloth is not recommended as it can leave very small scratches.
Deep clean
Have you done all of the above but still feel your jewellery is lacking some shine, or do think these cleaning methods are too much hassle? We recommend visiting a good jeweller. If you choose the expertise of a jeweller, first ask them how much the cleaning will cost and do bear in mind that you will not see your jewellery item(s) for a few days. After this, however, your jewellery will shine like never before!
